The Lone Gunmen

The beautiful, mysterious Yves Adele Harlow. No one knows who she is. No one knows why she hangs around with the Gunmen. No one knows what deep, dark secrets she keeps. Who is she? Why is she so cold to them, yet willing to risk everything to keep them safe? Is she a free agent, or does she answer to a shadowy group? This we know: Yves knows French (Planet of the Frohikes), German (Eine Kleine Frohike), and Spanish (Tango de los Pistoleros). We know that she is one of the best hackers on the market, and that she also has extensive knowledge of human anatomy (Madam I'm Adam), Chemistry (The Cap'n Toby Show, Tango de los Pistoleros), disguise (Pilot, Eine Kleine Frohike, Maximum Byers, The Lying Game), and she has an almost inexhaustable supply of sodium penthonol. She knows martial arts (The Cap'n Toby Show) and modern dance (Tango de los Pistoleros), enjoys two-handed uzis, (Pilot), and she is pretty up on world events (Bond, Jimmy Bond, Eine Kleine Frohike).

There is some debate about whether or not she has a back history with the Gunmen. In the Pilot, after she's hijacked the winch Frohike was using to steal the Octium chip, she arrives, disguised as a man, and plants a big kiss right on Frohike's lips, to which Frohike replies "You!" This suggests he might have kissed those lips before. He also seemed to know the most about her when explaining to the Gunmen that he believed it was her who stole the chip. Yet Frohike is not very forthcoming about any previous involvement with her. If nothing else, it would seem that Yves is more smitten with Jimmy, the two of them having exchanged many a meaningful glance. She even kissed him at the end of All About Yves.

It was Frohike who figured out that Yves Adele Harlow is an anagram for Lee Harvey Oswald, suggesting she has more of an affinity for The Lone Gunmen than she lets on. Since then, whenever undercover, she has always used a different anagram for Lee Harvey Oswald--some of them less perfect than others. Those anagrams include:

  1. Leroy W. DeShevala - Like Water for Octane
  2. Sara Lee Hwoyveld - Planet of the Frohikes
  3. Vera Elyse Leedo (drop the H and the W, add an A) - Tango de los Pistoleros
  4. Darva Loy Welsh (Drop 2 E's) - All About Yves

While Ms. Robinson plays the character very well, the character of Yves, alas, is not particularly original. Rather, she is a composite of every butt-kicking vixen on the market. She has qualities similar to Emma Peel (The Avengers), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), and Max from "Dark Angel." Fortunately for the viewers, there is enough mystery surrounding Yves that we feel she might yet have something to surprise us with.

Pure fan rumor speculates that she might be the daughter of The Well-Manicured Man--I am more inclined to believe this than have Cigarette Smoking Man as her father. After all--she's British. We know she's not an agent for the U.S. Government, in "Tango" she was operating independently of the FBI, and in "Cap'n Toby" she was at odds with a CIA agent. We know she's not involved in the consortium as she stole information from Morris Fletcher with the idea that it would be delivered to Agent Mulder. From the get-go, her identity was that of the techno-mercenary, a hired gun who could steal or hack anything for the right price. She's been a fly in the ointment for the Gunmen on many an occassion, stealing the Octium chip from them in the Pilot ep, using them as a tool to siphon clean the Belamirsk government account in "Bond, Jimmy Bond," using them yet again for the reward money in "Eine Kleine Frohike," she had them do all the footwork for her in "Like Water for Octane," and she tagged along in "Planet of the Frohikes" when she thought there might be something profitable in the Boulle laboratories. However, the only people who don't realize how much Yves cares about the Gunmen are Yves herself--and the Gunmen.
